Autumn / T.E. Hulme

Autumn

A touch of cold in the Autumn night
I walked abroad,
And saw the ruddy moon lean over a hedge
Like a red-faced farmer.
I did not stop to speak, but nodded,
And round about were the wistful stars
With white faces like town children.

  1. The central theme of the poem I believe to be beauty. Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year and one which is usually filled with many changes and vivid colors. Hulme’s description of a crisp, autumn night with a bright, large moon conjures up feelings of nostalgia for the reader. Anyone who has experienced the fall can certainly appreciate the beauty it brings. He uses the moon as the image with which he describes the kind of beauty he witnesses. He is looking at beauty as he gazes upward at the moon and is describing its light as it reflects the townspeople and the greenery that surrounds him.
