II - Children
The children
Oh! the little monsters
They jumped you
from above
Where they’d climbed
the trembling aspens
Bending them
and tilting them
They set their traps
With incredible tenacity
And they will not leave you alone
Until you've fought them off
Then they'll leave you
The treacherous ones
abandon you
To run away laughing.
There were some who stayed
When the others left to play
They stayed gravely seated.
There were some who went
All the way to the very end of the long drive
Their laughter suspended
When they returned
To see you watching them
Remorse and regret
But all was not lost
The fuse relit and the rocket
Again heard rushing through the air
As they all disappeared
down the long drive again.

Les enfants
Ah! les petits monstres
Ils vous ont sauté dessus
Comme ils grimpent après les trembles
Pour les fléchir
Et les faire pencher sur eux
Ils ont un piège
Avec une incroyable obstination
Ils ne vous ont pas laissés
Avant de vous avoir gagnés
Alors ils vous ont laissés
Les perfides
vous ont abandonnés
Se sont enfuis en riant.
Il y en a qui sont restés
Quand les autres sont partis jouer
Ils sont restés assis gravement.
Il en est qui sont allés
Jusqu'au bout de la grande allée
Leur rire s'est suspendu
Pendant qu'ils se retournaient
Pour vous voir qui les regardiez
Un remords et un regret
Mais il n'était pas perdu
Il a repris sa fusée
Qu'on entend courir en l'air
Cependant qu'eux sont disparus
Quand l'allée a descendu.
