Submit a Poem

The Penny Blog concentrates on reviving poetry that has fallen into the public domain. However, we will also publish contemporary, copyrighted work by living poets (including those who have never previously published).

The Penny Blog publishes only (copyrighted) work that has been submitted or invited, and for which permission to print has been granted.

A writer may submit previously published material, including material that is already accessible online. As there is no payment, other than exposure, nothing will be rejected due to prior publication.

By agreeing to publish a poem on the blog, the author gives the blog only a one-time, non-exclusive, archival right. Authors retain all other rights to poems, including the right to print or submit them elsewhere at any time.

Poems can be submitted on the blog as comments to this page, or by email to georgedance04@yahoo.ca.

Please include:
  • the text of (or a link to) your poem;
  • your e-mail address (not for publication - for correspondence only);
  • the exact spelling of your name (or pen name), as you want it to appear;
  • your location: state, province, country;
  • a link to your blog or web page.
The Penny Blog is a poetry archive, meaning that the poems we publish will be accessible to the public for the blog's duration. Once used, your poem will not be removed or blacked out from the public archive by us, or at all (except, in special circumstances, at your request). (If you later decide that you would like a poem archived on the blog to be removed or blacked out - say, because you wish to submit it to a publication that wants an exclusive right - please email georgedance04@yahoo.ca.)

Note that  some print magazines will not publish pieces that have been previously published, so if your work is published by us on the blog, it might be marketed to print magazines as a reprint, which can limit the number of markets that will accept it, and can reduce the pay rate it can receive. It is up to you, the author, to decide if publishing your new work on the blog, giving up your first publishing rights for no payment other than exposure and resume-building, is what you want to do.

  1. No use abusing
    or cursing anyone when
    restless and breathless
    I cry to God to help me
    for a while let me sleep

    sexless meditate
    in the darkest of hours
    negotiate peace
    with self and rest even if
    I exist in my sufferings

  3. The Child
    Walking in early hours of dawn
    The morning dew soaks my bare feet
    Honeysuckle sweet
    And birds summer songs
    I am a child again out on the lawn
    Down in the clover and daffodils
    Looking for fairies I know they are real
    Climbing so high in the Chinaberry tree
    White linen billows on a fair breeze
    Nighttime falls and fireflies fly
    We dance with the moon
    And the stars in the sky

  4. The songs of the river

    Rock and River you call to me
    You singe my soul
    You make me whole again.

    Cries and lies of history
    Sing to a tune of family
    Faint footprint in a rancid sea

    Space to attest, arrest this hooligan
