Dance Pageant - Spectacle de la danse /
Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau

I - Playing

Dance Pageant

Children you dance badly
I must add that it is hard to dance here
In this lack of air here
Lacking the space that is all of the dance.

You do not know how to play with space
Yet there you play
Unchained
Poor children who cannot play

How can you want to dance
I've seen the walls
The polis cuts off that look at its very debut
Chops off that one-armed vision at the shoulder
Before even a first rhythmic bending
Before its sudden race and faraway rest
Its flowering far beyond the horizon
Before the flower of your vision bonds with heaven
Your vision weds with heaven
A meeting of infinities a clash
Of marvels.

The dance is a second measure and a second start
It takes possession of the world
After the primal triumph
Of the vision

That look which leaves no trace in space
— Less than the flight of a bird's wing
Or a song's unseen passing
An imperceptible stirring of the air  —
Embrace it, the immaterial
Most near to the invisible permanence
Like an image in the river of a landscape
That no one saw fall in

Yet the dance is but a paraphrase of the vision
The path once lost to the eyes re-found in the goal
Of stately arabesques that reconstruct
The all-embracing seduction of their source.
